“Contigo” in StorySouth

This story is the anchor chapter in my manuscript, ASK THE MOON–a novel about friendship, sisterhood and the heartache and triumphs of musicians’ lives. The principle characters, Pilar and Goldy, grew up as step-sisters but grew apart after their parents split up. It’s their shared love and talent for music that continues to bond them even as their lives take very different paths.

I loved writing the episodic scenes from Pilar and Goldy’s lives, starting with their very first adventures in music with the birds singing outside the balcony of their Barcelona home. We glimpse Pilar’s life as a struggling harpist during her college years in Boulder, then a camping trip in the Rockies as Goldy is on the cusp of a breakthrough tour with her glam-punk band, Screamy Deluxe. Finally, we join the sisters on a getaway in the Pyrenees as Pilar’s famous actor husband prepares for a swanky movie premiere where the long lost sisters will walk the red carpet.

The story’s title refers to a song Pilar has written about her relationship with Goldy; “contigo” means together, and it refers to how the sisters live in each other’s imaginations, even when they’re apart. It’s a pretty long story (9300 words), I’m so happy to have it published in StorySouth.
